There are many sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s) in the world and sexually active individuals can come in contact with them. Some are very severe and non-curable like HIV and AIDS and some are thankfully curable like genital warts and Trichomoniasis.
What is Trichomoniasis?
Often known as the “trich”, it causes uncomfortable symptoms in some people and many are lucky enough to not feel anything. This is an infection caused by the parasite, Trichomonas vaginalis when humans come in contact with it.
Trichomoniasis is the most commonly curable STD in the world but it still does not mean that it cannot cause any serious harm if left untreated. Studies say that Trichomoniasis, if left untreated, can cause changes in women’s cervix, increase risk for pre term delivery, increase risk of low birth weight in babies, cause cervical cancer as well as infertility risk. Moreover, Trichomoniasis makes it easier to come into contact with HIV as well as pass it on to your partner!
Trichomoniasis can spread between a male and female sexual partner as well as two female partners. The chances of two males contacting Trichomoniasis are slim. Some people have defence mechanisms that allows their bodies to fight off Trichomoniasis on their own without any intervention. But for some Trichomoniasis requires medical treatment.
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis
Symptoms of Trichomoniasis hit a person 5-28 days after coming in contact with the parasite. Symptoms in women include:
- Itching or burning genitals
- Itching inner thighs
- Pain while urinating
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Discomfort or painful sex
Symptoms in men include:
- Itching or burning inside the penis
- Pain and burning after passing urine or ejaculating
- Unusual discharge from the penis
Home Remedies for Trich
Trichomoniasis is usually treated with antibiotics but natural remedies may also be effective in curing it. Some natural remedies that one affected by Trichomoniasis can try are:
Myrrh solution
Myrrh, extracted from the Commiphoramolmol tree, is known for its healing properties. A study has found it to be effective in women who had trichomoniasis, but antibiotics were not effective on them. 2 Myrrh tablets are to be taken by the woman with trichomoniasis on an empty stomach for 6-8 days.
Pomegranate juice
A small clinical study produced the results that women who took pomegranate juice were completely trichomoniasis free. After checking two months later, it was deduced that they are still trichomoniasis-free. The most viable reason for this may be the anti-parasitic effect that extracts of pomegranate have.
Zinc sulphate douche
A study was conducted on those women who did not react to conventional drugs. A one percent zinc sulphate solution was used as vaginal douche and it was effective in removing trichomoniasis on mostly all patients. It is not very clear how the zinc sulphate worked on these sample women, but even the follow up tests of these women came up clear with no symptoms of trichomoniasis.
Bergamot Essential oil
Bergamot Essential is an excellent wound healer as well as a natural deodorant. It is also a good form of antiseptic and antispasmodic. A few drops can be added into your bath and if you soak the right parts in, you have high chances of curing trichomoniasis. However, be careful to dilute Bergamot Oil properly, otherwise it can cause skin irritation, scabs, blisters, and redness.
Garlic
Garlic has many antibacterial and antimicrobial properties that can help fight off infections. It is a natural anti-septic and an anti-parasitic agent that helps greatly in fighting off the trichomoniasis parasite. It also helps with the itching symptom of trichomoniasis and boosts the healing process. Moreover, it is easily and cheaply available making it a strong contender for natural remedies to cure trichomoniasis.
To use garlic, take three to four cloves of garlic and wash and crush it. Boil a glass of water and add the crushed garlic to it. Steep the garlic in it for around 10 minutes. Strain the mixture, add pure, organic honey to it and drink this concoction for 7-10 days.
Yogurt
Yogurt has the properties to restore healthy bacteria in the body as well as the lactobacillus in the yogurt also promotes healthy bacteria. It is one of the best home remedies for trich and does not have any side effects.
A person affected by trichomoniasis can either consume one cup of plain yogurt every day. He/she may also douche some yogurt on the affected parts daily. Similar to any treatment, 7 to 10 days of regular use is compulsory.
Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is an excellent anti-inflammatory and ant parasitic source. It is a very helpful agent in killing bacteria, flushing out infectious discharges and keeping the vagina sterile. Apple cider vinegar if used regularly as a douche, helps fight off all infections and restore the normal balance in the vagina between good and bad bacteria.
To make an apple cider vinegar douche, mix two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar into half a cup of water. Use this mixture as a douche on your vaginal area and continue this process for 7-10 days.
Fenugreek seeds
Fenugreek seeds help boost the immune system and give the body the strength to fight off infections on a daily basis. Hence, eating or drinking fenugreek seeds can help to cure infections and is a pretty effective remedy for Trichomoniasis.
To use fenugreek seeds, soak some fenugreek seeds into water overnight. Drink this water on an empty stomach in the morning. Contrarily, you can also mix two teaspoons of fenugreek seeds with yogurt and eat it. Continue this for a couple of weeks for effective results.
Trichomoniasis treatment over the counter may be effective in curing Trichomoniasis for many people. However, if you experience a pain in the lower belly area, have unsubsiding fever, and are pregnant with Trichomoniasis infection; then do not hesitate in contacting your health care provider immediately. Sometimes, a strong infection will not go away with natural remedies and needs medical intervention immediately to not cause damage to your body or baby.
